The organisation PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is offering 1 million dollars to the first company to be able to offer competively priced invitro meat on the market. It must have the same consistency as chicken flesh as well as having the same taste.

Invitro meat is meat that is produced from a cell and grown in a laboratory. Think  Brittania Hospital when Malcolm McDowell stumbles into the laboratory where they are trying to make a human out of chunks of flesh; limbs, hands, torso, etc.
 Invitro will be like that but growing animal flesh for consumption by humans.
With research and development it will soon taste just like the real thing (depending on how cheap you go, what does the real thing taste like?). It's meat that never walks, never breaths, it only grows.

Is this ethical? The only harm any animal has is when a cell is extracted to grow the meat. A million chickens are killed per hour in the US alone, surely this is a better alternative.

It seems an excellent idea. The animals aren't harmed, less animals are killed, less animals are produced solely for consumption (as less will be needed).

However; business changes hands from farmers to scientists. Farmers, aside from growing crops, will not have so much product to sell (milk, if they keep their cows). And who knows how long it will take to grow crops too (which, like the invitro meat, will eventually be financially viable).

Another advantage is there is more land (since less farmers in business) so we can implement a plan of using prisoners to build more houses for our failing economy.

Although this all sounds fine, what about the quality of the meat? For the best meat I would imagine there will be lots of genetic modification to create healthy animals with which to take the cells from for the production of invitro meat, so that is a downside for the animals and animal rights people.
